Victor Boniface must decide on knee surgery, risking remainder of the season, as Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen agree on procedure necessity

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is set to decide whether to undergo knee surgery, with both Werder Bremen and parent club Bayer Leverkusen agreeing that the procedure is necessary, according to German media reports.

The 25-year-old forward, who joined Werder Bremen on loan until summer 2026, has struggled this season, failing to score in 11 Bundesliga appearances.

He was expected to address Bremen’s striking deficiencies but has been sidelined with a knee injury that Bild reports requires surgical intervention.

If Boniface opts for the operation, he would be ruled out for the remainder of the season, potentially returning to Leverkusen earlier than initially planned.

The striker is currently in Nigeria and is expected to return to Germany soon for further discussions with both clubs.

“Werder Bremen and Victor Boniface’s parent club, Bayer Leverkusen, have agreed that his ongoing knee issues require surgery,” Bild reported, as cited by German-based Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba.

The report adds that if Boniface declines surgery, he is unlikely to feature for Werder again this season.

Playing him without the operation carries a significant risk of further injury, which could threaten his long-term career prospects.

“If the striker opts not to undergo the operation, Werder Bremen would still refrain from using the loanee, as there is a genuine risk that another injury could be career-ending,” Bild added.

Boniface’s next steps remain uncertain, but the club and the player are expected to make a decision in the coming days, determining whether he completes the season in Bremen or returns to Leverkusen for rehabilitation.
