Victor Osimhen captained the Super Eagles for the first time in AFCON 2025, leading Nigeria to a 3-1 victory over Uganda in Group C action

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has expressed delight after captaining Nigeria in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash against Uganda, which ended in a 3-1 victory.

Osimhen, recently appointed vice-captain of the Super Eagles, led the team in the absence of captain Wilfred Ndidi, who was rested by head coach Éric Chelle.

The 27-year-old forward wore the armband for the first time in his international career.

“It’s a dream come true for me because I grew up watching the Super Eagles,” Osimhen said after the match, reflecting on the personal significance of the honour.

The Galatasaray striker praised his teammates for their performance, highlighting the cohesive play that helped secure Nigeria’s maximum nine points from their Group C matches.

Osimhen’s leadership comes at a crucial stage of the tournament, with the Super Eagles advancing to the knockout rounds following an emphatic group-stage campaign.
