Wale Tinubu wins the Lifetime Achievement Award at African Energy Week 2025 for his visionary leadership and lasting impact on Africa’s energy sector
Wale Tinubu, Group Chief Executive of Oando PLC, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the African Energy Week (AEW) 2025, a distinguished recognition of his enduring contributions to Africa’s energy landscape and his visionary leadership in shaping one of the continent’s foremost integrated energy companies.

The accolade, among the most coveted honours at AEW, celebrates individuals whose work has left a lasting legacy across Africa’s oil, gas, and energy sectors.
In a statement, the African Energy Chamber lauded Wale Tinubu for his dedication to advancing Africa’s energy security, his bold leadership in navigating Oando through uncertainty, and his pivotal role in demonstrating the power of indigenous companies to drive industrial growth and energy sovereignty.
Past recipients of the award include Afreximbank President Professor Benedict Oramah (2024), the late Namibian President Hage Geingob, former Senegalese President Macky Sall (2023), and Congo’s Hydrocarbons Minister Bruno Jean Richard Itoua (2022).
Tinubu’s inclusion in this prestigious circle of continental icons cements his standing as one of Africa’s most influential corporate leaders.
From Oando’s modest origins as a small downstream player, he has steered the company into a multinational energy powerhouse, with operations spanning exploration and production, power, and renewables.
Under his stewardship, Oando has come to symbolise African innovation and resilience, reflecting a broader belief in the continent’s ability to define its own industrial future.
A firm advocate of self-determination, Tinubu has consistently championed Africa’s right to harness its natural wealth for the prosperity of its people.
The Lifetime Achievement Award stands as a benchmark of excellence, celebrating leaders whose influence extends far beyond the boardroom shaping the narrative of Africa’s economic independence and energy transformation.
For Wale Tinubu, the honour signifies more than personal recognition; it represents a call to inspire future leaders to pursue bold visions for Africa’s sustainable development.

“The award is a fitting tribute to a leader who has consistently inspired others to believe in Africa’s promise and the power of its people,” the Chamber affirmed.
The Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Governor Dauda Lawal, has received the ZIK International Peace and Leadership Award in Ghana, with organisers recognising what they described as his administration’s achievements in public sector leadership and economic reforms.
The governor was honoured at the 7th ZIK International Peace and Leadership Award ceremony, held on Friday at the British Council in Accra. The event featured a lecture themed: “Leadership, Peace, and Regional Integration: Advancing Africa’s Development in a Changing Global Order.”
According to the organisers, Lawal’s award was based, among other considerations, on his administration’s progress in public sector leadership and economic reforms in Zamfara State.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ZIK Pan-African Award, His Royal Highness Professor Echefuna R.G. Onyeabadi, noted that the award was established to recognise individuals making meaningful contributions to the service of their people.
Receiving the award, Governor Lawal dedicated the honour to the people of Zamfara State, stating that it would further motivate his administration to intensify efforts toward transforming the state.
“This award is dedicated to all the people of Zamfara State. My administration has been working tirelessly to ensure the state can compete with any other in Nigeria. That was our promise and we have surpassed expectations in just three years,” Lawal said.
The governor highlighted key projects and reforms undertaken by his administration, including urban renewal initiatives, the construction of a modern airport and sweeping reforms in security, education, healthcare and the civil service. He noted that the newly constructed airport was particularly significant, as Zamfara had not benefited from such infrastructure in over 30 years since the creation of the state.
“We have made great strides in security, civil service reform, education, health and other sectors,” the governor added.
Lawal thanked the organisers for the recognition, saying the award would encourage him to do even more for the people of Zamfara.
“It means a lot to me and will motivate me to do even more for my people. Zamfara is on the rise,” he said.
