Governor Zulum awards N12.9bn aeronautics scholarship to 54 Borno students, funding studies in aerospace and engineering disciplines

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State awarded a N12.9 billion aeronautics scholarship to 54 students at a brief ceremony held at the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

The funding covers annual tuition and associated expenses for five years across various engineering disciplines.

The scholarship includes 10 beneficiaries specialising in Aerospace Engineering, 11 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 11 in Mechatronics Engineering, 12 in Software Engineering, and 10 in Systems Engineering.

Each student also received an immediate financial support package of N500,000 to cover resumption logistics and incidental expenses.

Governor Zulum emphasised the importance of focus and dedication in achieving academic excellence.

“What matters most is not just gaining admission, but how committed you will be in your studies. I advise you to remain dedicated and become good ambassadors of our state,” he stated.

The State Commissioner for Education, Lawan Abba Wakilbe, highlighted that the scholarship attracted over 3,000 applications.

The selection process involved a written examination, narrowing the pool to 1,200 candidates, from which the final 54 students were chosen.

Isaac Balami, founder of the university hosting the students, praised the initiative as a milestone for human capital development in Nigeria.

He expressed confidence that the beneficiaries would eventually contribute to the nation’s first made-in-Nigeria aircraft.
