Lagos Navy impostors arrested after defrauding residents and obstructing government operations. Task force confirms suspects were not serving officers

The Lagos State Task Force has arrested three individuals for impersonating officers of the Nigerian Navy, defrauding members of the public and obstructing lawful government operations.

The suspects were apprehended following an incident linked to the demolition of illegal structures and encroachments on government land in the Oworonshoki area of the state, the agency’s spokesperson, Raheem Gbadeyan, said in a statement on Thursday.

The principal suspect, identified as James K. Robert, reportedly presented himself as a Navy officer to secure undue advantages and intimidate residents.

“Closer observation revealed inconsistencies, including incorrectly worn service ribbons, missing regimental insignia, and an appearance inconsistent with that of a senior naval officer. These red flags confirmed the chairman’s suspicions,” Gbadeyan said.

The suspect, accompanied by his wife and an alleged orderly, visited the task force office seeking the release of vehicles removed from the demolition site.

When the chairman, Adetayo Akerele, refused to compromise professional ethics, the suspect allegedly became aggressive and threatened confrontation.

The task force immediately contacted the Nigerian Navy Military Police, which verified that the individual was not a serving officer, leading to the arrest of Robert and his accomplices.

Officers had previously been monitoring the suspects following complaints from the public about repeated impersonation and intimidation.

“The suspects are currently undergoing further investigation and will be prosecuted by the appropriate military authorities. This arrest serves as a strong deterrent against individuals impersonating security personnel,” Akerele said.

The development is part of a broader trend of civilians posing as military or police officers.

In August 2025, the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja, handed over a man accused of impersonating an army major to the Lagos State Police Command.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity through official channels to prevent further incidents.
