Ademola Lookman starred as Atlético Madrid dominated Barcelona 4-0 in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium

Atlético Madrid produced a sensational first-half display to crush Copa del Rey holders FC Barcelona 4-0 in the semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium on Thursday night, with Ademola Lookman among the scorers.

The visitors fell behind within seven minutes after Eric Garcia’s misplaced pass, slowed by the uneven pitch, slipped under goalkeeper Joan Garcia’s foot.

Lookman ensured the ball crossed the line, though the goal was officially recorded as an own goal.

Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead shortly after, finishing a swift attacking move, before Lookman added Atlético’s third with a composed finish at the end of a flowing team move that drew jubilant celebrations from coach Diego Simeone on the touchline.

Julian Alvarez capped the scoring before halftime, firing in Atlético’s fourth from inside the area to end an 11-match goal drought.

Barcelona attempted a comeback in the second half, but Pau Cubarsi’s goal was ruled out after a lengthy VAR review for offside.

Matters worsened for the Catalans when Eric Garcia was sent off late for a foul on Alex Baena.

Despite further chances for both sides, including efforts from Alexander Sorloth and Ferran Torres, Atlético held firm, with goalkeeper Juan Musso making key saves to preserve a clean sheet.

With the return leg set for March 3 at Camp Nou, Atlético carry a commanding advantage over the 32-time Copa del Rey winners.

The domestic cup now represents their most realistic route to silverware this season, amid struggles in La Liga and uncertainty over Champions League progress.
