FCCPC urges Nigerians to report housing dispute reports as it steps up action on real estate complaints and consumer protection enforcement

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, on Monday, April 27, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria, urged Nigerians facing unresolved housing disputes to formally report cases, as it intensified enforcement against alleged real estate violations involving developers and property transactions.

The FCCPC, through a statement posted on its official X handle, said housing-related complaints fall within its consumer protection mandate, particularly where citizens commit life savings to property purchases based on developer promises.

The Commission stated that enforcement actions are already underway in cases where homebuyers allege full payment for properties without delivery of the promised homes, including recent regulatory action concerning Paradise Estate in Abuja.

According to the FCCPC, consumer protection extends beyond everyday retail purchases and covers major financial commitments such as housing, which it described as a critical area requiring strict accountability and transparency.

The regulator stressed that developers must honour agreed timelines, communicate delays clearly, and provide lawful remedies where obligations are not met. It warned that failure to do so undermines trust in the housing sector.

In a firm statement, the Commission said, “Where payment has been received, agreed timelines must be honoured, delays properly explained, and lawful remedies provided where obligations are unmet.”

It added that transparency, proper documentation, and delivery consistency remain essential to restoring confidence in Nigeria’s real estate market, which has seen rising consumer complaints in recent years.

The FCCPC also called on affected consumers to escalate complaints with supporting documents, including proof of payment and correspondence with developers. It directed citizens to submit reports through its official complaints portal at complaints.fccpc.gov.ng.

The advisory comes amid growing scrutiny of housing transactions across Nigeria, where rising property costs and delayed project deliveries have triggered disputes between buyers and developers, prompting regulatory attention and enforcement actions.
