OSOGBO, Nigeria, Tuesday, 27 October 2026: The Osun State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, has dismissed officer Awopeju Cornelious Sanjo, service number OSNA/2021/00018, over alleged gross misconduct following disciplinary proceedings held on Monday, 26 October.

The dismissal was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the corps’ Public Relations Officer, CSA Yusuf Idowu Abass. The statement said the disciplinary process was conducted in accordance with the regulations governing the organisation.

According to the corps, the allegations against Sanjo were formally presented during the proceedings by the command’s Ambassador Provost, CSP Joshua Omogbehin (retd.).

The officer acknowledged the allegations during the process, the statement said, after which the command decided to dismiss him from service.

“Following the disciplinary process, he was dismissed from service in accordance with the applicable regulations,” the statement said.

The command also directed Sanjo to surrender all Amotekun uniforms, equipment and other official materials in his possession as part of the disengagement process.

The directive is intended to ensure a clear separation between the former officer and the security outfit, particularly in a role where uniforms and official equipment help establish an operative’s authority.

Corps Commander Adekunle Isaac Omoyele reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to discipline, professionalism and accountability, warning that misconduct capable of undermining public confidence would not be tolerated.

“All officers are expected to maintain high standards of conduct and perform their duties in line with the rules and regulations governing the organisation,” Omoyele said.

The commander urged personnel to remain vigilant and committed to their responsibilities, adding that officers found guilty of gross misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The corps also issued a public notice clarifying Sanjo’s employment status.

Residents were advised not to recognise or present him as a serving Amotekun operative, as he no longer held the authority or official standing to act on behalf of the organisation.

The notice carries practical significance for members of the public, who may rely on uniforms and official identification when dealing with security personnel.

The command’s instruction seeks to prevent any confusion over Sanjo’s status following his dismissal.

The announcement comes amid broader public scrutiny of security personnel and the standards expected of agencies entrusted with protecting communities.

In early October, the Osun Amotekun Corps said it had voluntarily handed four operatives over to the police for investigation into attacks in Ile-Ife and the death of Olalekan Oyeyemi Ajagungbade, popularly known as Emir, an aide to Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The corps stressed at the time that the circumstances required proper investigation and cautioned against premature conclusions.

Amotekun operates as a regional security initiative established to support efforts to protect lives and property across south-western Nigeria.

Its effectiveness depends not only on operational capacity but also on public confidence in the conduct of its personnel and the transparency of its disciplinary processes.

Previous reports from other Amotekun commands have also documented disciplinary action against officers accused of professional misconduct. In March 2024, for example, the Ondo State command announced the dismissal of three officers following an internal process.

Although the case involved a different state command and separate allegations, it reflects the wider emphasis placed on internal discipline within the regional security network. TheCable

In Sanjo’s case, the Osun command has presented the dismissal as a consequence of its disciplinary proceedings. However, the statement does not specify the precise acts underlying the gross misconduct allegation, and no independent account of the proceedings or response from Sanjo was available in the reports reviewed for this article.

The distinction matters because dismissal from service is an administrative decision and does not, on its own, establish that an officer committed a criminal offence.

The details of the allegations and the evidence considered during the proceedings would be necessary to assess the circumstances more fully.

For residents of Osun State, the immediate message from the command is that Sanjo is no longer authorised to operate as an Amotekun officer.

For the corps, the case provides an opportunity to demonstrate that professional standards apply to its personnel and that alleged breaches can lead to disciplinary consequences.

The police said the decomposing body of Oluwadamilola Adedayo was recovered from the suspects’ camp in Tukuba Forest, Kuje, Abuja, on October 19, 2026, following an intelligence-led investigation.

The victim was abducted alongside her mother, Nancy Adedayo, her 12-year-old brother, David Adedayo, and their housemaid, Jennifer David, during a gunpoint raid on their residence on Adedayo Adeosun Street, Kuchiyako, Kuje, on August 23.

According to the police, the kidnappers released the victim’s mother about an hour after the abduction to arrange ransom payment, while the housemaid and the boy were assaulted and abandoned unconscious in a forest.

They later regained consciousness and found their way home.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the Commander of the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad, ACP Godfrey Victor, said the operation followed a petition referred by the Inspector-General of Police’s Secretariat on October 15.

He said intelligence gathering led to the arrest of two suspects in Rijana community, Kaduna State, while five others were subsequently apprehended in Sagbon Lugbe, Abuja, through a joint operation involving police officers, vigilante operatives and other security agencies.

“On 19th October 2026, operatives led by ACP Victor Ogbiede Godfrey proceeded to the gang’s camp at Tukuba Forest, Kuje, FCT, where the decomposing body of Miss Oluwadamilola Adedayo was recovered,” he said.

Victor said the family paid N16.2m for the release of the abducted children, but the suspects allegedly demanded an additional N50m before releasing Oluwadamilola.

The police identified the seven suspects as Ishaka Abdullahi, 27, also known as Langalanga; Abdullahi Dabo, 42; Abubakar Jibrin, 20, also known as Mai-Laya; Barahu Ibrahim, 24, also known as Black; Sani Mohammed, 24; Alidu Lawal, 18, also known as De Jaguar; and Yakubu Abubakar, 28, also known as Soldier.

The suspects remain allegations under investigation and have not been convicted by a court.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of weapons and other items allegedly linked to the syndicate.

According to Victor, the exhibits included four AK-47 rifles, a locally made revolver pistol, 63 rounds of live ammunition, a mobile phone allegedly used for ransom negotiations, N400,000 and a motorcycle.

He added that investigators had linked the group to the abduction of a businessman, John Ali, in Kuje on September 24.

The police said investigations were continuing as they worked to establish the full extent of the syndicate’s activities and gather evidence for prosecution.

Oluwadamilola’s father expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police and the officers involved in the investigation, but said the family remained devastated by her death.

“The kidnapping and murder of our beloved daughter, Oluwadamilola, at this time has left our family in deep pain. However, the support and assurance from the leadership of the police force has given us strength and hope that justice will prevail,” he said.

He urged the police to pursue the investigation to its conclusion and ensure that everyone found responsible was brought to justice.

“We continue to appeal to the police, with the help of Almighty God, to get to the root of this matter and ensure that all those responsible for this wicked act are brought to book,” he added.

The arrests mark a significant development in the investigation into the family’s abduction, although the police have yet to announce the outcome of the prosecution process.

The suspect, identified as Mustapha Sani, was arrested on October 19, 2026, by operatives of the State Intelligence Department in Awka following an intelligence-led operation, the police said.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, adding that preliminary findings suggested the suspect had allegedly stolen mobile phones from unsuspecting victims in Adamawa before travelling to Anambra.

According to the police, the devices were reportedly intended for sale or personal use after the suspect fled the state.

“The recovered phone is currently being investigated to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged offence,” Ikenga said.

He added that investigators were working to determine the suspect’s alleged involvement and facilitate the return of the recovered device to its rightful owner.

The command said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft and determine whether the suspect was involved in other offences.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating crime, recovering stolen property and ensuring that suspects were dealt with in accordance with the law.

Ama also assured residents and visitors that the police would continue intelligence-led operations and proactive patrols to protect lives and property and maintain public order across the state.

The arrest comes amid other reported cases involving mobile phone theft and alleged financial fraud in the region.

In a separate incident, the Borno State Police Command reportedly arrested six suspects over the alleged theft of a mobile phone and the unlawful withdrawal of N5.65m from the owner’s bank account.

The victim, identified as Abba K., reportedly told police that his Infinix Smart 8 phone went missing from his pocket after he alighted from a commercial tricycle on October 13, 2026, along Damboa Road in Maiduguri.

The Borno case remains separate from the Anambra investigation.

The Anambra police have not disclosed whether the 19-year-old suspect has been charged in court.
