The Democratic Front (TDF) supports President Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers, calling it a necessary step to restore order amid political unrest

The Democratic Front (TDF), a pro-democracy group, has voiced its strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, calling the move a bold and necessary intervention to prevent a complete breakdown of law and order.

According to TDF Chairman Malam Danjuma Muhammad, the prolonged political impasse between the Executive and Legislative branches of Rivers State had created an environment where governance and economic development were severely hampered.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Muhammad stressed that the political conflict in Rivers, which has persisted for nearly two years, has paralyzed the state’s administration and impeded its progress.

He noted that the decision to declare a State of Emergency came after several unsuccessful attempts at resolution, including a meeting hosted by President Tinubu with the leadership of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

During the meeting, the President had urged for the swift implementation of the Supreme Court ruling that recognised the 27 members of the State Assembly, a judgment that had been a major point of contention in the state’s political landscape.

“Unfortunately, PANDEF was not able to strike any reasonable compromise with the parties in the dispute, which has paralyzed the administration of the state with severe consequences on economic development in nearly two years,” the statement read.

TDF highlighted the seriousness of the situation, pointing out that both political factions were unwilling to work together for the benefit of the state.

The group expressed concern over the increasing lawlessness and violence, citing incidents such as pipeline bombings as evidence of the deteriorating situation.

TDF argued that no responsible government could tolerate such disorder and must take decisive action to restore peace and security.

The pro-democracy group also welcomed the unanimous approval of the State of Emergency by both chambers of the National Assembly, reinforcing their belief that President Tinubu’s decision was made with the peace and safety of Rivers State residents in mind.

“We believe that President Tinubu acted in the interest of peace and security of residents of the state,” TDF stated.

Looking ahead, TDF called on all parties involved in the political crisis to use the six-month period of emergency rule as an opportunity to resolve their differences peacefully.

The group urged a renewed focus on dialogue and reconciliation, stressing that this was a crucial moment for Rivers State to heal and move forward.

This State of Emergency declaration is a pivotal moment for Rivers, a state plagued by prolonged political infighting that has affected its governance and economic prosperity.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on whether the emergency measures will pave the way for a lasting resolution or further exacerbate the political divide in the region.
