Adekunle Gold reflects on his journey, the importance of relaxing

Adekunle Gold opens up about his music career and how his daughter’s words made him reconsider his constant drive for success

Nigerian Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold has shared a candid insight into his relentless dedication to his music career, revealing that he hasn’t taken a break since releasing his debut album, *Gold*.

In a recent interview, the 38-year-old singer reflected on his rise to fame, his intense work ethic, and how his four-year-old daughter, Deja, has had a profound impact on his perspective.

Adekunle Gold, who gained widespread recognition in 2014 with his debut single *Sade*, continued to climb the ranks of the Nigerian music industry, earning a nomination for Best Alternative Song at the 2015 Headies.

Following the success of his breakout hit, he signed with Olamide’s YBNL record label and released his first album, *Gold*. Despite these achievements, the musician admitted that no success felt sufficient and he was always chasing more.

“I didn’t know what it felt like to enjoy my wins,” Adekunle Gold confessed. “I didn’t know how to stop. And sometimes, to breathe, to be in the moment, to live, you have to pause and take a look at your wins.

” This revelation comes after years of hard work, with Gold admitting that his passion for music had always driven him to pour money earned from his side hustles into his music career, even when his freelance and 9-5 jobs didn’t seem to suffice.

Reflecting on his journey, he described a childhood environment where laughter was scarce, and discipline was paramount. “My dad was a very strict man. He rarely laughed with us, and when he did, it felt like it was a better day than usual.

I wonder if it’s genetic,” he said. This strict upbringing may have contributed to his serious nature as an adult.

However, a surprising conversation with his daughter Deja made him reconsider this unyielding drive. In a lighthearted moment, Deja told her father, “Daddy, you are always serious about everything.” At first, Adekunle Gold dismissed the comment, but Deja’s persistence left him questioning his approach to life.

“Her words got me thinking; how does my four-year-old know to say this? It made me wonder if I’ve been too focused on work and not enough on living in the moment,” he reflected.

While it may seem that the singer’s constant focus on success has come at the cost of personal joy, Adekunle Gold has vowed to change his approach.

“I have made a pact with myself (the 22nd one) to relax and enjoy more, be more in the moment, to let my hair down,” he shared, revealing that he plans to take a step back and embrace life’s pleasures more fully.

His daughter’s candid feedback, alongside the pressures of being in a highly competitive industry, have clearly influenced Gold’s outlook on balancing work and life.

As he continues to juggle his career with family life, he aims to find the balance between ambition and relaxation, a lesson learned from both his daughter and his own journey.
