CAF AFCON expansion to 28 teams announced, with tournaments every four years to enhance competition and showcase African football talent

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations to 28 teams, aiming to enhance competitiveness and give more nations a platform to shine.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed the decision during an official statement, noting that the tournament will now be held every four years instead of every two.

“The extended cycle allows countries to prepare adequately, improve squads, and build competitive consistency,” Motsepe explained.

Currently, 24 nations participate in Africa’s premier football competition. The expansion is expected to broaden participation across the continent, offering emerging football nations more opportunities to compete at the highest level and showcase talent.

Motsepe described the move as a strategic step in the development of African football, emphasising that a four-year cycle will elevate the tournament’s prestige and allow nations to focus on long-term growth rather than short-term performance.

Analysts suggest the expansion could intensify qualification battles and provide a stage for previously underrepresented nations, potentially reshaping African football’s competitive landscape.
