Carney Chukwuemeka is reportedly set to represent Austria instead of Nigeria at senior international level, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Former Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is reportedly poised to commit his international future to Austria, potentially ending Nigeria’s hopes of securing the 22-year-old’s services.

Born in Austria to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka has represented England at youth levels up to Under-20s but has not yet played for a senior national team.

Under FIFA rules, this makes him eligible to switch allegiances before featuring competitively at senior level.

The Austrian Football Association is said to be working to finalise an agreement that would see Chukwuemeka join their senior squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder’s decision would mark a significant loss for Nigeria, which had been hopeful of adding him to the Super Eagles’ ranks.

Chukwuemeka has impressed in Germany since leaving Chelsea, combining technical skill and creative midfield play, attributes that would bolster Austria’s midfield options.

His switch, if confirmed, highlights the growing trend of dual-nationality players weighing competitive opportunities and career prospects in deciding their international allegiances.
