The Czech Republic national football team secured Czechia World Cup qualification on Thursday in Prague after a tense 2-2 draw with Denmark was settled by penalties, with Michal Sadilek converting the decisive kick to send his side to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The dramatic playoff final saw Czechia return to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 2006, marking a significant achievement for the national side after a hard-fought campaign that tested their resilience throughout.

Pavel Sulc gave the hosts an early lead with a well-taken volley following a cleared corner, setting the tone for a competitive encounter.

Denmark responded in the second half through Joachim Andersen, who headed in from a Mikkel Damsgaard free kick in the 72nd minute to level the score.

Czechia regained the advantage in extra time when Tomas Krejci struck in the 100th minute after a scramble in the penalty area, with his effort deflecting past the Danish defence.

However, Denmark refused to relent and equalised again in the 111th minute through substitute Kasper Hogh, who headed in from a Christian Eriksen corner shortly after entering the pitch.

The match proceeded to penalties after neither side could find a winner in regulation or extra time.

Czechia held their nerve in the shootout, with Tomas Chory and Tomas Soucek converting their efforts.

Ladislav Krejci missed his attempt, but it did not prove costly as Denmark faltered under pressure.

Denmark’s shootout challenges included missed penalties from Rasmus Hojlund, Anders Dreyer and Mathias Jensen, while Christian Eriksen scored their only successful spot kick.

The misses ultimately proved decisive, sealing Denmark’s elimination from the playoff.

Goalkeeper Matej Kovar played a crucial role in Czechia’s success, producing key saves during the match to deny Denmark’s attacking threats and maintain his side’s competitive edge.

His interventions helped keep Czechia in contention as Denmark controlled possession for long periods but struggled to convert chances.
