Nigeria advances its African Games 2031 bid as AU Sports Council inspection team assesses facilities, infrastructure, and hosting readiness

Nigeria has taken a significant step in its bid to host the 2031 African Games following the arrival of an inspection team from the African Union Sports Council (AUSC), as the country intensifies efforts to secure hosting rights for the continental multi-sport event.

The delegation was officially received by the National Sports Commission, NSC, on Wednesday, April 1, marking a key phase in the evaluation process.

According to the Commission, the visit involves a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s sporting facilities, infrastructure, logistics, accommodation capacity, and transportation systems to determine its readiness to host Africa’s premier multi-sport competition.

Officials from the NSC said the inspection forms part of a broader technical evaluation against established continental hosting standards, with experts examining the country’s overall sports ecosystem and organizational capacity.

The National Sports Commission stated that Nigeria’s bid is anchored on a long-term vision that goes beyond hosting the Games, focusing on infrastructure development, youth engagement, and economic opportunities driven by sports.

The country is also leveraging its history of hosting international competitions, alongside ongoing investments in sports infrastructure, to strengthen its case as a credible host nation.

The leadership of the NSC reaffirmed its commitment to presenting a strong bid that reflects Nigeria’s capacity to deliver a world-class African Games experience, emphasizing planning, coordination, and sustainable impact.

The bid comes after Nigeria’s unsuccessful attempt to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, India, which had previously been expected to boost Abuja’s chances of staging the centenary edition.
