The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim of Asaba C Division, were punished after a video showing them allegedly receiving money from a member of the public went viral in January 2026.

The incident occurred on January 13, 2026, at the police station, where the officers were captured using a POS terminal while interacting with the motorist.

The disciplinary action followed an orderly room trial conducted by the command, with the outcome approved by Delta State Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct under the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

Edafe said the commissioner upheld the recommendation for a reduction in rank, with Inspector Augustine Jeremiah demoted to Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was reduced to the rank of Constable.

The command said the punishment reflects its commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability among officers.

The Commissioner of Police reiterated the position of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on the prohibition of extortion and the misuse of electronic payment platforms within police formations.

Oyeniyi stressed that officers are not authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any circumstance.

“The Commissioner urged officers and men of the Command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens,” Edafe stated.

The commissioner added that the disciplinary measure should serve as a deterrent and reinforce public confidence in the police force.

The command also encouraged residents to report cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit as part of efforts to improve transparency and accountability.
