England Champions League elimination record set as four Premier League clubs are knocked out at the same Round of 16 stage

English football has entered the history books for the wrong reasons after four Premier League clubs were eliminated at the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 stage, marking a first-of-its-kind record in the competition’s history.

The clubs affected are Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, all of whom crashed out following defeats in their respective second-leg fixtures on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Manchester City were eliminated by Real Madrid, while Chelsea suffered defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. Newcastle United were knocked out by Barcelona, and Tottenham Hotspur exited the competition after losing to Atlético Madrid.

The unprecedented outcome means that, for the first time in Champions League history, four teams from the same country have been eliminated at the same stage of a single season.

According to Opta statistics, the result represents a historic low for English clubs in Europe’s elite competition, despite their strong domestic reputation and recent continental success.

The development has intensified scrutiny on Premier League sides’ performances in Europe, particularly at the knockout stages, where tactical discipline and experience often prove decisive.

Football analysts note that while English clubs continue to dominate domestic competitions, their collective failure in this season’s Champions League highlights the increasing competitiveness of European football.
