London, UK, 6 January 2026 European football has recorded a wave of high-profile managerial exits in the opening week of the year, underscoring the unforgiving nature of modern club football.

On New Year’s Day, Chelsea confirmed the departure of head coach Enzo Maresca following a 2–2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth, leaving the Blues with just one win in seven league matches.

Sources cited clashes with the board over recruitment, player workload, and team selection as contributing factors.

Maresca departs having won the UEFA Conference League and the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup. Liam Rosenior has been appointed as his long-term successor.

Four days later, Manchester United dismissed Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United and a contentious press conference in which Amorim publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy.

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has taken interim charge, with Amorim reportedly receiving a £10 million payout.

West Bromwich Albion joined the trend on 6 January, sacking Ryan Mason seven months into his tenure after a 2–1 defeat to Leicester City, marking the club’s 10th consecutive away loss.

First-team coach James Morrison has assumed interim duties.

Scotland’s Celtic parted ways with Wilfried Nancy on 5 January, ending a 33-day tenure the shortest in club history.

Nancy’s dismissal followed a 3–1 defeat to Rangers, his sixth loss in eight matches, after succeeding Martin O’Neill as interim manager.

Beyond these high-profile departures, pressure is mounting on managers including Nuno Espírito Santo at West Ham United and Scott Parker at Burnley, with both clubs struggling near the bottom of the Premier League.

The early days of 2026 have thus already highlighted the harsh reality of European football: patience is in short supply, and results-driven decisions dominate the managerial landscape.
