Gbenga Daniel mourns Dotun Oladipo, praising the late 56-year-old Eagle Online publisher for his courage, warmth and contribution to journalism

Former Ogun State Governor and Ogun East Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel on Thursday, August 27, 2026, mourned veteran journalist and The Eagle Online publisher Dotun Oladipo, describing the 56-year-old’s death in Lagos as a profound loss to his family, colleagues and Nigeria’s media industry.

Daniel conveyed his condolences in a message to the Oladipo family, recalling a distinguished journalism career that took the late publisher from the traditional newsroom into Nigeria’s growing digital media space.

Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after suddenly taking ill at his office in Lagos and later dying at a hospital. His death was confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, which he previously led.

The circumstances surrounding his death came as a shock to colleagues and associates. The Eagle Online reported that Oladipo had been in his usual state of health earlier in the day before falling ill.

Daniel’s tribute particularly highlighted Oladipo’s years at the defunct Compass Newspaper, where he rose from Assistant Project Manager to Editor of Sunday Compass.

According to Daniel, Oladipo’s progress through the newsroom reflected his intellect, professionalism and commitment to journalism.

“He was a man of ideas, courage and uncommon generosity of spirit,” Daniel said.

Oladipo subsequently built another chapter of his career in online journalism as founder and publisher of The Eagle Online, bringing years of experience in reporting and editing to a rapidly changing media environment.

Before establishing the publication, he had also worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor. He was also a member of the PUNCH editorial board.

His transition into digital publishing coincided with a period when online journalism was becoming increasingly important to how Nigerians consumed news.

GOCOP said Oladipo was among the publishers who recognised the need for online media operators to build a stronger professional community as the sector developed. He served as the guild’s president from 2017 to 2021 and later became its emeritus president.

The late journalist was also the founding president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, where colleagues remembered his leadership and dedication.

The International Press Institute, Nigeria Guild of Editors and other professional bodies have joined the growing tributes, with several highlighting Oladipo’s contribution to journalism, press freedom and the development of online publishing.

Daniel said Oladipo’s influence extended beyond personal professional achievements because of his commitment to the wider development of journalism and its role in society.

“Through his work at Compass and subsequently as publisher of Eagles Online, he remained committed to the growth of the profession and the role of the media in society,” Daniel said.

Oladipo’s educational background also reflected his early commitment to mass communication. He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.

The Association of Mass Communication Graduates, AMACOG, Class of 1992, also remembered Oladipo as a valued member and friend, describing him as a mobiliser, motivator and goal-getter who brought warmth and energy to the association.

President Bola Tinubu has separately mourned Oladipo, describing his death as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry and acknowledging his contribution to political journalism and credible public discourse.

For Daniel, however, the loss is both professional and deeply human.

He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s wife, children, mother, wider family, friends and colleagues, praying that God would grant the family the fortitude to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.
