The suspect, aged 22 and studying Material and Metallurgical Engineering, reportedly committed the crime after a disagreement escalated violently. The two checked into a hotel room in Obukpa, Nsukka, on the night of June 14, 2025.

According to the Enugu State Police Command spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect used a false identity to register at the hotel.

Following their check-in, the pair engaged in two rounds of intercourse. Afterward, Ememem allegedly demanded an extra ₦15,000 in addition to the ₦5,000 initially agreed upon.

Police allege this dispute quickly spiralled out of control, ending with Gambo strangling her to death in a fit of rage.

In a failed attempt to cover up the crime, he wrapped Ememem’s body in a towel and curtain before hiding it under the bed. Staff at the hotel only discovered the decomposing body two days later, when a foul odour drew their attention.

“This is a deeply disturbing case,” said SP Ndukwe. “The suspect went to great lengths to evade capture, but our investigators remained vigilant.” The hotel room murder case triggered swift police action, leading to a thorough investigation.

Investigators found that the suspect had given a fake phone number, making initial contact impossible. However, intelligence-led efforts tracked him down to his student lodge in Nsukka on July 2, where he was arrested. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

Among the items recovered from Gambo were Ememem’s iPhone, a Redmi tablet, earbuds, and a bottle of red wine. These were all items she had brought to the hotel that night.

Gambo had tried to dispose of some belongings by tossing them out of the lodge window in a plastic bag. His effort to hide evidence ultimately failed.

Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, applauded the swift response from law enforcement officers and assured the public that the matter would not be taken lightly. “Let this be a warning to those who think they can escape justice. We will find you,” he said.

The Commissioner urged parents to become more vigilant in monitoring their children’s behaviour. He also called on youths to avoid social vices and peer pressure, which he described as contributing factors in this growing trend of campus-related violence.

The tragic hotel room murder case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further inquiry and legal proceedings.

Many students on campus remain in shock, questioning how such violence could occur in their university community.

A fellow student, who asked not to be named, expressed disbelief. “Deborah was full of life. I saw her the day before it happened. It doesn’t feel real,” she said.

The university has yet to issue a formal statement, though internal sources say that counselling services are being considered for affected students.

Meanwhile, debates continue online, with many Nigerians calling for stricter regulations on off-campus lodging and hotel guest registration procedures.
