The burial took place in his country home in Umuezeduru, Amauzari, Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area. Pa Diogu passed away in August 2025 after a prolonged illness at the age of 82.

Speaking shortly after the burial, Ike Diogu described his father as “an honourable man of peace who left a beautiful legacy,” expressing gratitude to the Imo State Government, local community, and Nigeria’s basketball family for their support during the difficult period.

Edward Diogu Jnr, the first son of the deceased, pledged to continue his father’s legacy of peacemaking and community service.

He promised to promote infrastructural development and create employment opportunities in the Amauzari community.

“An era ended today and a new one began. I promise to honour my father’s legacy and ensure that our land prospers,” he said.

Widow Jane Diogu eulogised her late husband, calling him “a cherished man of valour” and thanking him for “49 good years of love, kindness, care and teaching.” She prayed for his eternal rest in the bosom of the Lord.

Representing Governor Hope Uzodimma, Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Evaristus Onyeocha, highlighted Ike Diogu’s contributions to Nigerian basketball, describing him as “one of Nigeria’s finest and a living legend.”

“On behalf of the state government and the sports family in Imo, I condole with the Diogu family and I wish to say that we are happy with Ike for always making Imo proud,” Onyeocha said.
