Tinubu inaugurates construction of new INEC annex in Abuja, pledging stronger democratic institutions and enhanced electoral integrity for Nigeria’s future

President Bola Tinubu has described the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the backbone of Nigeria’s democracy while inaugurating the construction of a new INEC annex office in Abuja.

The facility is intended to complement the current national headquarters and address long-standing infrastructure limitations.

Speaking at the ground-breaking event on Tuesday, Tinubu said the project aligns with his administration’s commitment to bolstering democratic institutions and safeguarding electoral credibility.

He emphasised that INEC must be fully equipped in infrastructure, legislation, and policy to deliver on its constitutional mandate effectively.

“For this reason, it is only right that such an institution is housed in a structure that reflects its dignity and national importance,” Tinubu stated. “The new headquarters is a clear signal of our unwavering support for INEC autonomy, capacity and growth.”

The president also praised the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project. Wike assured that construction would be prioritised for completion before the end of Tinubu’s tenure.

INEC Chairperson Mahmood Yakubu said the new building was a long-overdue response to the congestion of the commission’s current headquarters, originally designed in 1997 for far fewer staff and functions.

Today, INEC operates with more commissioners, departments, and over 1,000 staff at the central office.

Yakubu highlighted that the new complex, located in Maitama District, will include a museum, auditorium, media centre, and other key facilities to enhance electoral operations.

He dismissed concerns over the FCT’s role in funding the building, noting that this would be the third time in 34 years the territory had provided INEC with office accommodation.

The complex is expected to house a five-storey building with basement parking and support services, reflecting modern standards for public institutions and reinforcing INEC’s role in democratic governance.
