Joeboy explains Afrobeats global recognition, crediting Nigeria’s talent, population, diaspora, and social media for the genre’s worldwide rise

Afrobeats global recognition did not happen overnight, according to popular Nigerian singer Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, widely known as Joeboy.

He attributes the genre’s international rise to the expressive nature of Nigerians, a large population base, and the role of the diaspora in promoting the sound across continents.

Speaking in a recent interview with Zwart, Joeboy said Afrobeats had always been destined for global impact.

He noted that the abundance of talent in Nigeria and the quality of music emerging from the country contributed immensely to its widespread appeal.

“Afrobeats is here now because it has been a long time coming. And there’s so much talent, it’s only right that we just spread it to the world,” he said.

“Thankfully, Nigeria has a very huge population back home and even in the diaspora.”

Joeboy added that Nigeria’s cultural confidence and visibility abroad helped push the genre forward.

Naturally, we are very loud… wherever we are in the world, we like to represent.

“Naturally, we are very loud. That’s what they said. So, we are very out there. And, wherever we are in the world, we like to represent,” he said.

Beyond cultural identity, the singer also highlighted the influence of social media in connecting Nigerian sounds to global audiences.

Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube have played vital roles in amplifying Nigerian content, making it easier for emerging artists to be seen and heard worldwide.

Afrobeats, once limited to West African circles, now enjoys airplay on international radio, performances on global stages, and collaborations with mainstream artists across Europe and North America.

For Joeboy, this evolution is not surprising—it is simply the result of talent, numbers, connectivity, and cultural pride finally meeting opportunity.

As Nigeria continues to produce chart-topping hits and dynamic performers, the genre’s influence looks set to deepen globally.
