Julius Berger and Ahmadu Bello University showcase bitumen stabilised road technology at COREN conference, highlighting eco-friendly innovation

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) have unveiled an eco-friendly innovation in road construction using the Bitumen Stabilised Method, drawing major attention at the 33rd COREN Engineering Conference held in Abuja.

The breakthrough, described as Cold Recycling Technology, involves reusing existing asphalt materials without the application of heat—drastically reducing environmental impact, cost, and construction time.

It was highlighted by Dr. Amodu Ismaila, Project Coordinator at the Research and Development Centre (RCN), during his technical presentation at the event.

According to Ismaila, the method has been successfully applied in the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano highway project, and represents a major step forward in sustainable road rehabilitation.

“Cold Recycling Technology is an innovation that significantly eases road construction processes. It allows for the reuse of asphalt pavement without heating, resulting in faster, cheaper, and greener construction,” he said.

He added that the approach strengthens Julius Berger’s leadership in sustainable engineering and has contributed to the company winning several industry awards in recent years.

The technology stems from a strategic partnership between Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria—bridging the gap between academia and industry to solve real-world infrastructure challenges.

Engineers at the conference swarmed Julius Berger’s exhibition stand, eager to learn about the wide applications of the cold recycling method in Nigerian infrastructure.

Speaking at the opening session, Senator Barinada Mpigi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works (represented by Ashley Emenike), praised Nigerian engineers for their central role in national development.

“Engineering remains a cornerstone of national growth. Based on our committee’s oversight reports, over 420 road and bridge projects have seen significant progress or completion under the current administration,” he noted.

The conference, themed “Advancing Quality Engineering Services and Businesses in Nigeria: Professionalism, Compliance, and Remunerations,” brought together top engineers, firms, and regulatory stakeholders to discuss infrastructure standards and professional ethics.
