Kano commissioner nominees are expected before the State Assembly on Tuesday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf moves to expand his executive council
The Kano State House of Assembly is scheduled to screen two additional commissioner-nominees forwarded by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at 10am on Tuesday, as the state continues its cabinet reconstitution.
KANO, November 2, 2026: The Kano State House of Assembly, under Speaker Rt. Hon. Jibril Isma’il Falgore, is scheduled to screen two additional commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at the Assembly complex in Kano State.
The screening, scheduled to begin at 10am, will form part of the constitutional process for considering the governor’s nominations before their possible confirmation and appointment to the State Executive Council.
The Assembly’s Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday, November 2, following the receipt of an official letter from Governor Yusuf requesting the lawmakers to consider the two nominees.
Shawai confirmed that the screening would proceed as scheduled, emphasising that the exercise would follow the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and take place under the leadership of Speaker Falgore.
“The House of Assembly will on Tuesday, as scheduled, screen the two commissioner-nominees submitted by the governor for confirmation,” the statement said.
He further described the exercise as an important responsibility of the legislature in ensuring that individuals considered for membership of the State Executive Council meet the necessary requirements.
“This process remains an essential constitutional responsibility of the Assembly to ensure only qualified and capable individuals join the State Executive Council,” Shawai added.
The Assembly’s announcement did not disclose the names of the two additional nominees or provide details of the ministries they might oversee if confirmed.
The latest nominations come amid Governor Yusuf’s efforts to reconstitute his cabinet following significant political developments in Kano State earlier in 2026.
In January, Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that was followed by the departure of several political appointees associated with his former political platform.
The development affected the composition of the state administration, creating the need for further appointments and adjustments within the executive structure.
The Assembly had already undertaken a separate screening exercise on October 26, when lawmakers considered and confirmed six commissioner-nominees forwarded by the governor.
Those confirmed included Air Commodore Salisu Yusha’u (retd.), Ibrahim Namadi, Professor Sani Lawan, Muktar Ishaq Yakasai, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa and Idris Garba Mustapha.
The earlier exercise was presided over by Speaker Falgore, with lawmakers examining the nominees’ professional backgrounds, qualifications and experience before approving their appointments.
The latest screening therefore represents another stage in the ongoing process of filling positions within the Kano State Executive Council.
Under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, state commissioners are nominated by the governor and presented to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation before appointment.
The process gives lawmakers an opportunity to examine nominees’ qualifications and suitability for public office, while providing a legislative check on executive appointments.
For Kano residents, the outcome of Tuesday’s exercise will be relevant to the composition of the state cabinet and the administration’s capacity to oversee its various ministries and government programmes.
The proceedings are expected to begin at 10am, although the Assembly has yet to announce further details concerning the identities of the nominees or the specific portfolios under consideration.
