Severe traffic gridlock worsens in Mararaba as road construction and bridge demolition cause severe delays for Abuja commuters and motorists

Commuters and residents of Mararaba, a densely populated suburb on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, are facing worsening traffic congestion as ongoing road construction along the Abuja–Keffi Expressway continues to disrupt movement in the area.

Mararaba road congestion worsens further situation has left thousands of motorists stranded daily, with delays stretching for several kilometres during peak hours, particularly for workers commuting into Abuja for work.

Mararaba, which serves as a major residential hub for civil servants and business owners working in the capital, has long been known for heavy traffic congestion due to its strategic location on one of the busiest entry routes into the city.

The situation has been exacerbated by the demolition of the former Mararaba Bridge and the ongoing construction of a new twin flyover project along the expressway, which has significantly reduced available road space.

Motorists say the narrow passage created by construction equipment has resulted in long queues and extremely slow movement, with some describing journeys that now take several hours to complete.

One commuter recounted being stuck for over an hour near the One Man Village axis, noting that traffic only eased slightly at the boundary between Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Another road user, Sunny, said the lack of adequate traffic management has worsened the situation, with limited presence of traffic officials and poor lighting conditions increasing safety concerns along the corridor.

Residents and drivers have called on authorities to improve coordination with construction firms, deploy more traffic personnel, and accelerate work on the ongoing infrastructure project to ease hardship.

They argue that while the road upgrade is necessary, the current management of the project has significantly impacted productivity, comfort, and safety for thousands of daily commuters.

The construction work is expected to continue for several months, raising concerns that traffic conditions may remain difficult unless urgent interventions are implemented.
