MASSOB announces Sit-at-Home for May 30 Biafra Day commemoration was announced to mark the 59th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 1967.

The group said the sit-at-home exercise will affect markets, schools, banks, transport hubs, and both public and private business premises between 6am and 4pm on the day.

According to a statement issued by MASSOB’s National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, the observance is intended to honour those who died during the Nigerian Civil War and to promote its non-violent self-determination campaign.

The group, led by Uchenna Madu, also used the occasion to demand the release of detained pro-Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued detention as unjust.

“We demand his immediate release and call for justice for all Biafrans who have been unjustly detained or persecuted,” the statement read.

MASSOB, however, stressed that participation in the sit-at-home is voluntary and insisted that no member would force or intimidate residents into compliance.

The organisation also stated that no protests, demonstrations, or public gatherings would be held during the commemoration period.
