Matheus Cunha scores a late equaliser as Manchester United draw 1-1 with Leeds at Elland Road, denying the hosts a rare victoryManchester United were denied a rare defeat by fierce rivals Leeds United after Matheus Cunha struck a crucial equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday.

The home side took the lead in the 62nd minute through Brenden Aaronson, exploiting a defensive lapse by teenage United defender Ayden Heaven.

Aaronson raced into the box and finished clinically past keeper Senne Lammens.

However, Cunha, who has scored three goals in his last five games, kept United in contention.

Joshua Zirkzee’s clever pass allowed Cunha to stretch and poke the ball past Lucas Perri from 12 yards, earning the visitors a point.

Leeds had threatened throughout the match, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Leny Yoro, and Gabriel Gudmundsson coming close to opening the scoring.

United also had chances through Benjamin Sesko and Diogo Dalot, but both were unable to convert.

The result leaves Leeds winless against United at Elland Road since 2002, while United’s failure to claim three points halted their push into the Premier League top four. Leeds sit fifth after winning only one of their last five league matches.

Manager Rubem Amorim deployed his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, tinkering with tactics following a 1-1 draw against Wolves earlier in the week.

Despite the tactical adjustments, United managed to respond under pressure thanks to Cunha’s composure in front of goal.
