Suspected political thugs disrupted a campaign rally organised by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asaba, Delta State, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, leaving some supporters reportedly injured and a vehicle damaged in an incident that raised fresh concerns about political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The attack reportedly occurred while NDC supporters were gathered at the rally venue in the Delta State capital. Witnesses and social media footage described a chaotic scene as people ran for safety following the confrontation.

According to a report by Daily Post, the suspected attackers allegedly assaulted some supporters and damaged a vehicle parked close to the gathering.

Some attendees were also reported to have lost mobile phones and other personal belongings while attempting to escape the disturbance.

A video circulating online showed people fleeing amid the confusion. A voice heard in the footage expressed disappointment over the incident, saying the supporters had attended the gathering peacefully.

“We came here to campaign in peace. We did not come to fight anybody. What happened today is not good for democracy,” the speaker said.

The reported attack comes amid heightened political activity and previous security concerns involving NDC supporters in Delta State. However, the identities of those responsible for Saturday’s reported incident and the circumstances that triggered the confrontation have not been independently established.

The development has renewed attention to political security in Delta State, where an earlier confrontation involving NDC and All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters was reported in September.

On September 18, 2026, a political mobilisation exercise by NDC supporters in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, was disrupted following a confrontation with suspected political thugs.

The incident prompted Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to direct security agencies to investigate and ensure that anyone found responsible was brought to justice.

The state government’s position was communicated by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, who stressed that political disagreements should not degenerate into violence or intimidation.

The Delta State Police Command subsequently provided details of the September confrontation. Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said officers had received intelligence about a possible clash between APC and NDC supporters before the rally.

He explained that officers rescued a man identified as Collins Egbara after he was allegedly beaten by a mob in Effurun. An AK-47 rifle was also discovered during a search of an old building nearby.

The police said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the ownership of the firearm.

However, the September incident occurred in Effurun and should be distinguished from Saturday’s separately reported disturbance in Asaba.

As of the time of this report, there was no independently verified statement from the Delta State Police Command identifying those responsible for Saturday’s incident or confirming the reported injuries and damaged property.

The latest development comes as political parties intensify preparations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The incident has again raised questions about the safety of political gatherings and the responsibility of security agencies to protect supporters exercising their democratic rights.

Political campaigns are an essential part of the democratic process, and the freedom to assemble, canvass for candidates and express political opinions should be protected regardless of party affiliation.
