Nigeria Brazil food cooperation paves way for major reforms as Tinubu vows to remove barriers, unlock food potential, and strengthen global partnerships

President Bola Tinubu has made a strong pledge to remove all bureaucratic and structural barriers blocking the transformation of Nigeria’s agriculture.

His announcement comes as Nigeria Brazil food cooperation intensifies, with a shared goal of unlocking full food production potential and reclaiming food sovereignty.

During a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at Copacabana Forte in Rio de Janeiro, Tinubu laid out his vision for a modernised agricultural sector, built on partnerships and systemic reform. He was joined by senior cabinet ministers and governors from five Nigerian states.

“Bureaucracy has slowed us down for too long,” Tinubu stated. “But we are now breaking down those barriers to realise the full promise of agriculture, particularly in livestock production, food security, and export readiness.”

Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s reform programme includes removing technical delays across trade, aviation, energy transition, and resource management. He called Brazil a trusted partner in this mission, praising its leadership in food production and agricultural innovation.

“We want immediate action—not just dialogue—on collaboration to increase food production,” he told the Brazilian delegation, emphasising a deep desire to create jobs, support rural economies, and grow the blue economy.

In response, President Lula assured that Brazil would fast-track the formalisation of all pending agreements. He committed to supporting Nigeria through enhanced cooperation in livestock development, agricultural research, and technology transfer.

“We are ready to work with you,” Lula said. “Our research institutions will collaborate on animal health, genetic improvement, and disease management.”

The Nigeria Brazil food cooperation is now focused on practical outcomes. At the meeting, Nigeria’s Agriculture Minister, Senator Abubakar Kyari, reinforced the administration’s dedication to food security.

He highlighted the country’s capacity in fertiliser production and its readiness to scale operations.

Livestock Development Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha presented three critical areas for bilateral cooperation: disease control, sanitary frameworks, and genetic research. These are considered essential to modernising Nigeria’s livestock sector and reducing food imports.

Also present were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and key security advisers, including the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed. Their presence signalled the national importance of the initiative.

Five state governors—Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Mohammed Bago (Niger), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos)—joined Tinubu’s delegation. They expressed full support for the agricultural vision and its alignment with sub-national development strategies.

Governor Abiodun welcomed the addition of a business forum during the visit, calling it a step that could attract new investors and open wider economic channels. “We are aligned with the President’s vision. Subnationals will support this framework fully,” he said.

As Nigeria Brazil food cooperation gains momentum, both nations are showing strong resolve to eliminate delays and drive impactful reforms. Their renewed collaboration signals a shift from promises to practical implementation, with agriculture at the core.
