Nigerian Navy discovers suspected explosives staging camp in Rivers and Bayelsa creeks, recovering ammunition and materials for improvised devices

The Nigerian Navy has uncovered a suspected staging camp linked to hostile activities in the creek areas of Rivers and Bayelsa States, recovering ammunition and materials believed to be used in the production of improvised explosive devices.

It was discovered that the Rivers Bayelsa operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH during patrols in the Soku area, following what officials described as suspicious movements along the waterways.

According to a statement by the Naval Director of Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, naval personnel first observed a high-powered speedboat transporting six individuals dressed in unverified uniforms along a creek route between Rivers and Bayelsa States.

The boat, reportedly fitted with a 200-horsepower engine, was seen moving from Sangama community towards the Russia community creek before dropping off three individuals in a suspicious manner and retreating into the creeks.

The unusual movement pattern prompted a targeted patrol operation, which led to the identification of a concealed camp hidden deep within the waterways.

During the search, naval operatives recovered 50 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition concealed in a water container, alongside other materials suspected to be linked to illegal and hostile operations.

Additional items found at the site included old vehicle batteries, electrical wiring, and containers holding unidentified substances, which officials said may be associated with the fabrication of improvised explosive devices or acts of pipeline sabotage.

The Navy stated that the site was destroyed to prevent further use by criminal elements, while recovered materials were taken for further investigation.

Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security surveillance across Nigeria’s coastal and creek corridors amid rising concerns over sabotage and illegal activities.
