The Ogun State Government calls on residents to maintain healthy communication practices without causing noise pollution, marking the 2025 International Noise Awareness Day

In commemoration of the 2025 International Noise Awareness Day, the Ogun State Government has urged its residents to prioritize healthy communication practices that do not contribute to environmental noise pollution.

The call was made in a statement released by the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, who emphasized the critical importance of responsible communication under this year’s theme, “Protect Your Hearing, Protect Your Health.”

Commissioner Oresanya highlighted that while effective communication is essential for societal well-being, noise pollution remains a significant public concern with serious implications for public health and the overall quality of life. He described it as a nuisance that demands conscious effort from all citizens to mitigate.

He stated that the Ministry of Environment is using the occasion to remind residents of the stipulated maximum permissible noise levels for various environments.

It is realisation of this the Ministry of Environment is using the celebration to remind residents of the maximum permissible noise level for residential places, places of worship, places of Entertainment and Commercial areas,” said Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya.

“For residential areas, the permissible level is 50 decibels during daytime and 35 decibels during night time. For places of worship, the permissible level for daytime is 60 decibels and 40 decibels during night time, while that of places of Entertainment and Commercial Centres are equally pegged at 60 decibels and 40 decibel for day and night times,” Commissioner Oresanya clarified.

He called upon households, community leaders, and operators of entertainment and commercial establishments to strictly adhere to these standard decibel limits, warning that non-compliance would result in sanctions.

He noted that in 2024 alone, the state government sanctioned 175 noise polluters, including religious centers, entertainment venues, and commercial outlets, with 45 of them being completely shut down for repeated violations.

Furthermore, Commissioner Oresanya urged Community Development Associations (CDAs) across the state to take proactive steps in establishing and enforcing mutually agreed-upon permissible noise levels within their respective neighborhoods, emphasizing that such limits must be collectively respected by all residents.

He reaffirmed the Ogun State Government’s unwavering commitment to public awareness campaigns, continuous engagement with stakeholders, and the use of moral persuasion as key strategies to encourage voluntary compliance with noise regulations, all in a bid to foster quieter and healthier communities across the state.
