Ogun State Sango Tollgate Demolition carried out as government removes shanties to reduce accidents and improve safety along Lagos border

The Ogun State Government on Tuesday demolished shanties and temporary structures along the road setback at the Sango Tollgate border area between Ogun State and Lagos State, in a renewed effort to curb recurring traffic accidents and restore safety in the busy corridor.

The exercise, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Kafayat Lawal, targeted illegal roadside structures that authorities say have contributed to congestion and avoidable fatalities around the tollgate axis.

Kafayat Lawal stated that the Ogun State Sango Tollgate Demolition followed repeated warnings and notices issued to traders and street vendors occupying the affected areas.

According to her, alternative trading space had already been provided for affected traders at Plaza Road in Sango, as part of efforts to relocate commercial activity away from high-risk zones.

“The exercise will free the tollgate and under-bridge street trading which frequently leads to loss of life when there are mishaps around the area, which has become a source of worry to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians,” Kafayat Lawal said.

She added that the government would not tolerate continued trading in the tollgate vicinity, stressing that such activities had resulted in avoidable deaths and permanent injuries over time.

“The state government will therefore not fold its hands and allow street trading in the tollgate area which has led to avoidable loss of life and permanent disabilities due to its danger,” she added.

Authorities warned that anyone found engaging in street trading around the tollgate and under-bridge areas would face full legal consequences, urging compliance with relocation plans developed in collaboration with Ado-Odo Ota Local Government and the Olota-in-Council.

The demolition marks another phase in the state’s broader campaign to decongest roadside trading zones and improve traffic safety along one of the busiest inter-state routes in the region.
