Owerri residents lament irregular electricity supply weeks after commissioning of Orashi 15MVA Substation, citing disrupted businesses and daily life

Residents of Owerri have voiced growing frustration over persistent power outages, even weeks after the commissioning of the Orashi 15MVA, 33/11KV Injection Substation by Governor Hope Uzodinma and Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Many residents, including those from Ikenegbu and Amaigbo streets, reported that the substation, designed to provide uninterrupted 24-hour electricity, has largely failed to improve power supply.

The facility, equipped with a 15MVA transformer to step down voltage from 33KV to 11KV, was expected to enhance electricity access for households, businesses, and public institutions.

Despite the government’s initiative, several parts of Owerri remain in darkness, with irregular power supply affecting economic activities.

Business owners, including restaurant operator Chinaka Ibenaso, described daily losses due to fuel expenses for generators and spoiled goods.

Consumers also criticized the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for issuing excessive bills despite inconsistent power supply.

Residents are now calling on authorities to restore regular electricity and ensure the new substation meets its intended purpose.
