Public-private partnerships in sports development urged to fund football and empower Nigerian youths through grassroots initiatives and national identity

Partnerships in sports development have been identified as the key to revitalising grassroots football in Nigeria, as stakeholders call for urgent collaboration between the Federal Government and private organisations to address funding shortfalls in local sports infrastructure and talent nurturing.

At the finals of the Honourable Rasheed Super Cup, held on Thursday, June 12, the competition’s organiser, Rasheed Alao, appealed to both government authorities and business leaders to close the persistent gap in sports financing.

He emphasised that Nigeria is rich in football talent, but limited access to funding continues to hinder opportunities for young athletes to grow and compete.

Alao praised efforts already made by the authorities but noted they remain insufficient without complementary action from the private sector. He explained that the transformation of football hubs across the globe has never been the result of government effort alone.

Private investment and the technical input of sports professionals have been essential elsewhere and should be encouraged in Nigeria.

He added that overdependence on the state has slowed progress, arguing that a wider embrace of public-private alliances would not only boost football development but also reduce reliance on government structures.

He maintained that sustainable partnerships would energise communities and create better pathways for talent discovery and mentorship.

In addition to his sports message, Alao linked the event with national identity, noting it was held in remembrance of June 12, a date central to Nigeria’s democratic story.

He described the Super Cup as a reflection of youth awakening, especially in Lagos, where young Nigerians are increasingly recognising the importance of preserving the nation’s historical journey.

Speaking passionately, he said Nigeria’s youth must reconnect with the past to reclaim the future. He called on young people to participate actively in civic life and resist the growing disconnect among the country’s socio-economic classes.

According to him, the awareness generated through sports and community events can bridge the social gaps that often divide Nigeria’s population.
