The transfer shock was highlighted by Gary Neville during a recent episode of The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, where he reflected on the most unexpected moves in English football.

Neville stated that Campbell’s decision to leave Tottenham for fierce North London rivals Arsenal in 2001 remains unmatched in terms of surprise and impact on Premier League history.

He described the transfer as “massive”, stressing that its shock value stood above all other player movements he had seen during his career at Manchester United.

Campbell’s move in 2001 stunned English football at the time, with the defender making the direct switch between two of the Premier League’s most bitter rivals.

The Sol Campbell Tottenham Arsenal transfer shock saw the England international go on to enjoy a successful spell at Arsenal, where he spent five seasons before leaving in 2006.

He later returned briefly to Arsenal in 2010 for a short stint before concluding his career with spells at Portsmouth and Newcastle United.
