Reports on 26 March 2026 indicate that 15 aspirants, including 11 men and four women, are positioning to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun, whose second term concludes on 29 May 2027.

Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is regarded as a frontrunner, enjoying support from key members of the State House of Assembly and consolidating political structures across the state.

Party sources indicate his growing popularity among residents and strategic outreach across communities have reinforced his status as a leading contender.

The contest also features Gboyega Isiaka, a sitting member of the House of Representatives and three-time governorship candidate, alongside Abiodun Akinlade of Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency.

Other notable figures include former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Dr Tunde Lemo, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Sarafa Ishola, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Dimeji Bankole, Ministers Wale Edun and Dr Bosun Tijani, and Dr Tunji Oredipe.

From the Peoples Democratic Party, 2023 governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu, known as Lado, remains influential, though internal challenges could affect his prospects unless realignments occur.

Segun Showunmi, convener of the Alternative Movement, reportedly enjoys multi-party support from the Labour Party, Action Democratic Party, and Action Alliance.

On the women’s side, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has returned to active politics on the APC platform.

Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele is reportedly considering a bid, while veteran broadcaster Modele Sarafa-Yusuf and US-based physician Dr Bolaji Odusina have declared ambitions, with Dr Odusina leveraging her grassroots medical programmes for community support.

Power rotation remains a central issue, with advocates calling for Ogun West, which has yet to produce a governor since 1976, to be given a chance.

Traditional rulers, led by Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, have intensified consultations to support this regional aspiration.

Sources close to Senator Adeola indicate that widespread public support positions him as a potential consensus candidate, with residents frequently naming him as their preferred choice for 2027.

Party leaders are reportedly taking this sentiment into account to ensure electability and avoid internal conflicts.

Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr Kayode Akinmade, denied claims that the governor is backing any aspirant, emphasising that all APC contenders remain party members and will receive unified support once a candidate emerges.
