The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (CSSLN) urgently calls on federal and state governments for coordinated action to stop the escalating terrorist attacks and killings across the nation

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (CSSLN) has issued a strong statement demanding immediate and coordinated intervention from both the Federal and state governments to address the resurgence of brutal terrorist attacks plaguing several states across Nigeria.

In a statement released by its Chairman, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, the CSSLN vehemently condemned the recent surge in terrorist activities and killings witnessed in Plateau, Borno, Benue, Niger, and Kwara states.

The conference highlighted the tragic loss of life, widespread displacement, and profound trauma inflicted upon countless Nigerians by these heinous acts.

“We are alarmed by the escalating insecurity in the land and the seeming helplessness with which these attacks are met,” the speakers stated, emphasizing that “The time for mere condemnation and rhetoric has passed; urgent and coordinated action is now required at all levels of government to end these bloodbaths and restore peace and order.”

While acknowledging that defense and national security primarily fall under the federal government’s purview, the CSSLN stressed that “every level of government bears responsibility for the security and welfare of the people.

” They specifically urged state governors to recognize that governance extends beyond infrastructure development and ceremonial duties, emphasizing that “True governance is rooted in the protection of lives, the preservation of order, and the alleviation of suffering.”

The conference further called on state governments to actively complement federal efforts by enacting and enforcing enabling laws for community policing and other grassroots-driven security models.

They advocated for states to develop proactive frameworks that integrate local intelligence, social support systems, and youth engagement in the fight against insecurity.

Additionally, the CSSLN urged the federal government to engage meaningfully with the citizenry and implement bold, practical measures to alleviate the hardship caused by current economic policies.

“Millions of Nigerians are groaning under the weight of inflation, unemployment, and a cost-of-living crisis,” the conference maintained.

The speakers affirmed their unwavering commitment to support all necessary legislative actions aimed at restoring security, promoting justice, and fostering inclusive governance throughout the country.

They concluded with a powerful message: “The killings in Benue, Niger, Plateau, Borno, Kwara, and any part of Nigeria must not be allowed to continue unchecked.

Justice must prevail, and peace must be restored. Let it be known that the safety, dignity, and well-being of every Nigerian must remain the top priority of all arms and levels of government.”
