Celebrity fashion designer Oluwatoyin Lawani, widely known as Toyin Lawani, has alleged medical negligence against a Lagos-based hospital following a spine surgery that she said resulted in severe complications.

Lawani disclosed details of the Toyin Lawani surgery ordeal in a series of Instagram posts, stating that she visited the hospital for a spinal implant procedure but later developed a lung infection and temporarily lost the use of her legs after spending close to N100 million on treatment.

The Lagos-based entrepreneur and mother of three accused the hospital of mismanaging her health and said she is preparing to take legal action once her recovery improves.

“You go spend close to 100m for hospital & them go still mismanage your health,” Lawani wrote, expressing frustration over the outcome of the procedure.

According to her account, the complications began shortly after surgery, when she reportedly started bleeding in her lungs and was rushed back into the theatre for emergency reoperation.

Lawani said she later stopped breathing, forcing doctors to puncture her lungs, an intervention she claimed damaged her vocal cords and affected her ability to speak.

She further alleged that she lost the use of her legs after being discharged and had to return to the same hospital, where a specialist in the United Kingdom advised a third surgery to remove a tracheostomy tube and stabilise her breathing.

After the procedure, Lawani said she travelled to the UK with her family for further medical care, where doctors allegedly discovered infections in her lungs and advised additional surgery.

“When I got here, the doctors told me I had infection in my lungs and showed me the big lumps,” she said, adding that she has remained in and out of hospital since.

Lawani maintained that the experience has left her with lasting health challenges and accused the hospital of failing to take responsibility despite the complications.

“They won’t even care if it’s their mismanagement; you will still pay,” she wrote.
