Victor Osimhen pays tribute to late Rashid Yekini, calling him Nigeria’s greatest striker, after scoring and assisting in AFCON quarter-final win over Algeria

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has hailed the late Rashid Yekini as Nigeria’s greatest footballer of all time, insisting that his own goal-scoring feats will not diminish the legend’s legacy.

The Galatasaray forward scored one goal and provided an assist as Nigeria defeated Algeria 2–0 in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations at Marrakech Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking after receiving the Man of the Match award, Osimhen emphasised that breaking records would not overshadow Yekini’s contributions to Nigerian football.

“Whether I equal or surpass the record doesn’t matter. The late Yekini will always be the best striker the Super Eagles have ever had,” he said.

Osimhen acknowledged the inspiration he draws from other former Super Eagles forwards, including Odion Ighalo, and praised his teammates for their pivotal roles in the victory.

“I just try to do my job, fight for the team, score goals, and provide assists. But I don’t want to take the credit alone; the entire team deserves the praise,” he added.

The striker has already scored four goals in five matches this tournament, improving significantly from the 2023 AFCON, where he netted once as Nigeria finished runners-up.

He attributed his form to personal growth and the confidence gained from team support.
