UI global ranking places the University of Ibadan first in Nigeria and 1,291st worldwide, ahead of UNILAG and University of Nigeria

The University of Ibadan has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, placing 1,291st globally among 32,148 institutions assessed worldwide.

The University of Lagos followed in second place nationally and 1,355th globally, while the University of Nigeria ranked third in Nigeria and 1,397th worldwide.

The latest UI global ranking places the three institutions ahead of Covenant University, Ota, which came fourth nationally and 1,522nd globally.

Landmark University ranked fifth in Nigeria at 1,659th worldwide, followed by the University of Ilorin at 1,883rd and Obafemi Awolowo University at 1,986th.

Ahmadu Bello University was eighth nationally and 2,068th globally, while the University of Port Harcourt ranked ninth in Nigeria at 2,077th.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure completed the national top 10, ranking 2,203rd worldwide.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is published twice a year and evaluates higher education institutions using indicators linked to visibility, openness and academic excellence.

The assessment is designed to reflect an institution’s digital presence, access to scholarly resources and research influence.

Beyond the leading institutions, the Nigerian ranking shows a broad spread of universities and higher education institutions across the global table.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University ranked 2,308th, followed by Bayero University Kano at 2,543rd and the University of Calabar at 2,592nd.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology ranked 2,728th, while Olabisi Onabanjo University came in at 2,865th. The Federal University of Technology, Minna was ranked 2,930th globally.

The University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, University of Uyo and Lagos State University also featured among Nigeria’s higher-ranked institutions.

The July 2026 results underline the continuing challenge for Nigerian universities seeking stronger positions on the global academic stage.

Although the University of Ibadan leads nationally, its 1,291st global position leaves Nigeria outside the world’s top 1,000 institutions in this particular assessment.

At the top of the international table, Harvard University retained first place, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The University of Oxford, University of Washington, Cornell University, University of Michigan, University of California, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University completed the global top 10.

The United States dominated the leading positions, accounting for seven of the top 10 institutions, while the United Kingdom was represented prominently by Oxford.

The results provide a useful snapshot of how Nigerian institutions are performing in areas increasingly tied to their global visibility, although rankings can vary considerably depending on the methodology and indicators used.

For Nigerian universities, the strong showing by institutions such as UI, UNILAG and the University of Nigeria offers an encouraging picture of their digital and academic visibility, while the distance from the global elite highlights the scale of the work still required to compete at the highest international level.
