Dauda Lawal Transparency Award recognises Zamfara governor for prudent resource management, fiscal accountability and transparent governance
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, received the Efficient Public Resource Management and Transparency Award from Blueprint Newspapers at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, in recognition of his administration’s approach to public finance, accountability and governance.
The honour was presented during the eighth edition of Blueprint Newspapers’ Annual Public Lecture, Impact Series and Awards, which brought together policymakers, security officials, political leaders, diplomats, academics and civil society representatives.
The 2026 event focused on “Security Challenges and Integrity of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections”, placing the award within a wider national conversation about institutional responsibility, public confidence and the quality of governance ahead of the next general election.
Blueprint had earlier announced that the event would provide a platform for stakeholders to examine security threats to the electoral process and practical ways of strengthening credible elections.
Blueprint Managing Director, Salisu Umar, said the newspaper selected five governors for recognition based on what it described as visible achievements in governance, prudent management of public resources and people-centred development.
Blueprint said the awards followed an assessment centred on performance, accountability, innovation and tangible impact on citizens.
The newspaper said the recognition was also intended to encourage healthy competition among public officials in delivering democratic dividends.
For Lawal, the recognition comes as his administration approaches the midpoint of its second year in office after taking over the leadership of Zamfara on May 29, 2023.
His government has consistently presented its agenda around security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, economic development and human capital.
Accepting the award, Lawal expressed appreciation to Blueprint Newspapers and said the recognition offered encouragement to his administration’s efforts to rebuild the state.
“This award is a testament that the media and Nigerians outside Zamfara are witnessing the efforts my government is putting in our quest to make Zamfara great,” Lawal said.
He added that his administration had recorded progress across security, education, health, the economy, human capital and infrastructure, attributing the achievements to what he described as transparent governance.
Blueprint’s citation highlighted Lawal’s background in banking and public administration, alongside his experience in diplomacy and politics. Umar said that experience had contributed to the governor’s approach to financial management and institutional leadership.
The newspaper specifically cited efforts to strengthen financial discipline, public-sector accountability and the use of government resources for projects capable of producing measurable benefits for residents.
The recognition also follows a series of other honours received by Lawal in 2025 and 2026.
In February, the governor received the LEADERSHIP Newspaper Governor of the Year award, while the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria honoured him in April as Infrastructure Governor of the Year for his administration’s urban renewal efforts.
In December 2025, Lawal also received the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service award for Governance and Security Reform.
The award citation pointed to measures including the payment of more than N15 billion towards a 13-year backlog of gratuities for retired civil servants, an increase in the minimum wage from N7,000 to N70,000, urban renewal and the reconstruction and equipping of more than 500 public schools.
Some of the administration’s recent initiatives have centred on institutional reform rather than physical projects alone.
In July 2026, Lawal signed executive orders establishing an integrated framework covering education financing, school protection, quality assurance, healthcare and security, while also launching the distribution of the national curriculum to public schools.
The state government has also pursued reforms in public-sector administration.
Information from the Zamfara Office of the Head of Civil Service says the administration has reduced the number of ministries from 28 to 16, introduced merit-based assessments for senior appointments and pursued digital systems for payroll, attendance and personnel records.
There are, however, significant challenges that continue to shape assessments of Lawal’s tenure. Zamfara remains one of Nigeria’s states most affected by banditry and displacement.
A June 2026 assessment by AIT noted that residents had welcomed visible improvements, particularly in parts of Gusau, while stressing that insecurity remained the state’s most serious challenge and that many residents wanted stronger action on security and humanitarian needs.
That context gives the Blueprint recognition a broader significance. An award for resource management does not, by itself, settle questions about overall government performance.
Rather, it represents the newspaper’s assessment of a particular aspect of governance at a time when citizens and institutions are paying closer attention to how public funds are managed and translated into services.
Independent voices have also pointed to developments in Zamfara’s public spending and service delivery.
In July, Zamfara’s Auditor General, Abubakar Damaligi, said investments in health, education, agriculture and infrastructure were making an impact, while an audit training programme was launched to strengthen performance auditing and ensure public expenditure delivers measurable value.
The award therefore adds another layer to the ongoing assessment of Lawal’s administration. For the governor, the immediate message is one of encouragement.
For Zamfara residents, the more important test remains whether the principles of accountability and prudent resource management translate into lasting improvements in security, public services and everyday life.
Blueprint’s recognition places Lawal among five governors honoured at the 2026 ceremony, alongside Peter Mbah of Enugu, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto and Umar Namadi of Jigawa, with each governor receiving an award tied to a specific area of governance and public impact.
