Edo police arrested a woman for allegedly selling her baby for ₦1.4m in Uromi; newborn rescued and suspects set to face court

The Edo State Police Command has arrested Martina Dachung for allegedly selling her newborn baby boy for ₦1.4 million in Uromi, Edo Central Senatorial District.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the case came to light after one Ebhomien Matthew Asibor reported the suspected child trafficking arrangement to the Uromi Division.

Acting on the tip-off, officers from Iruekpen Divisional Headquarters arrested Dachung, who reportedly led police to two other suspects linked to the transaction: Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Centre, Uromi, and Oha Promise.

“The newborn was safely retrieved, and evidence of the monetary transaction amounting to one million, four hundred thousand naira (₦1,400,000) was recovered,” Ikoedem said.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, assured residents that the command would sustain its efforts against criminal activities until all forms of criminality are eradicated in the state.

He also encouraged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist the police in maintaining law and order.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court as the investigation continues.
