Yobe road fatalities rose to 115 in 2025 as FRSC reports over 13,500 traffic offenders arrested and highlights causes of crashes

Road fatalities in Yobe State rose sharply in 2025, with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reporting 115 deaths, up from 78 the previous year, according to sector commander Andrew Longkam.

The FRSC also recorded 926 injuries from crashes, an increase from 867 in 2024, while 1,664 people were involved in road accidents across the state.

Encouragingly, the number of individuals rescued without injury rose slightly, from 604 to 623.

Longkam revealed that 13,538 traffic offenders were apprehended and sanctioned last year.

Over-speeding, tyre violations, dangerous driving, overloading, and route violations were cited as the leading causes of avoidable accidents in Yobe.

“The 2025 outcome will guide our renewed strategies for 2026, aligned with the FRSC’s goal to reduce road traffic crashes by 10 per cent nationwide using data-driven interventions,” Longkam said.

Measures planned include intensified enforcement, expanded driver training, stronger public enlightenment campaigns, strict monitoring of speed-limiting devices, and closer collaboration with emergency services and the State Ministry of Works.

The sector commander emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged all motorists to comply with traffic regulations and drive responsibly.
