Champions League goalkeepers goals remain rare but iconic, from Vincent Enyeama to Anatoliy Trubin’s dramatic strike

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin reminded football fans on Wednesday that goalkeepers can still decide matches in the UEFA Champions League, not only with saves but with goals.

The 24-year-old became the latest custodian to score in Europe’s elite competition after heading home a stoppage-time goal that sealed Benfica’s dramatic 4–2 victory and secured a place in the knockout play-offs.

The moment reopened a rare chapter in Champions League history, where a handful of goalkeepers have crossed the halfway line and left a permanent mark.

One of the earliest names on that list is former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama.

Vincent Enyeama achieved the feat in September 2010 while playing for Hapoel Tel Aviv, calmly converting a 79th-minute penalty during a group-stage defeat to Lyon.

Although Enyeama had earlier scored in the qualifying rounds against Red Bull Salzburg, only his Lyon goal counts officially under Champions League records.

Across his career, which rose to prominence at Enyimba, Enyeama scored 15 penalties in competitive matches, underlining his composure under pressure.

German goalkeeper Hans-Jörg Butt remains the most prolific scorer among goalkeepers in the competition.

Hans-Jörg Butt netted three Champions League goals, all against Juventus, across spells with Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich between 2000 and 2009.

Each strike came from the penalty spot, cementing his reputation as a fearless specialist.

A different kind of history was written during the 2009–10 season by Sinan Bolat.

The then Standard Liège goalkeeper scored the first non-penalty goal by a goalkeeper in Champions League history, powering in a stoppage-time header against AZ Alkmaar to secure qualification.

That goal remains one of the competition’s most dramatic late interventions.

More recently, Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel delivered one of the tournament’s most viral moments during the 2023–24 season.

Ivan Provedel surged forward in added time and headed home a last-gasp equaliser against Atlético Madrid, rescuing a 1–1 draw and igniting celebrations at the Stadio Olimpico.

Now, Anatoliy Trubin has joined that exclusive group.

Sent forward with Benfica’s European hopes at stake, Trubin found space in the penalty area and headed in a decisive goal that confirmed the Portuguese side’s progression.
