Eric Chelle will remain Super Eagles coach with a year left on his contract, says NFF President Ibrahim Gusau following AFCON 2025 bronze medal win

The Franco-Malian manager guided Nigeria to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, defeating Egypt in the third-place match on 17 January.

Speaking to journalists, Gusau stated that the NFF will allow Chelle to complete his remaining 12 months before considering any contract extension.

“We still have a one-year contract with Eric, and therefore, whatever interest anyone will show in him, it has to wait until his contract expires,” Gusau said, adding that the federation wishes to avoid distracting the coach during his tenure.

Gusau also highlighted Chelle’s dedication to Nigerian football, noting his confidence in achieving his ambitions with the national team.

“He has so much belief in the Super Eagles, and he has every confidence that he can achieve all his dreams with the Super Eagles. So, that’s the key thing that I believe in, and I know we discussed it several times with him,” Gusau added.

Despite receiving offers from other African nations, including Tunisia and Angola, Chelle has remained committed to the Super Eagles.

He has also been linked to the vacant Olympique Marseille coaching position following Roberto de Zerbi’s departure.

Chelle, whose coaching experience includes top-tier French and Algerian clubs, has expressed ambitions of becoming the first African manager to coach Real Madrid, reportedly identifying a Super Eagles star as his potential first signing.
