The Nigerian Bar Association condemns a Federal High Court judge for ordering Sowore’s lawyer to kneel, calling it inappropriate and unlawful

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has criticised Federal High Court judge Mohammed Umar for allegedly instructing human rights activist Omoyele Sowore’s lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, to leave the Bar and kneel during proceedings on Monday.

The incident reportedly occurred amid a disagreement over hearing dates, when Abubakar raised his voice during submissions. Justice Umar is also said to have threatened the lawyer with contempt proceedings.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the NBA described the judge’s actions as “inappropriate” and “contrary to the standards of judicial conduct expected on the Bench.” The association emphasised that no law permits a judge to order any legal practitioner to kneel in court.

While recognising judges’ authority to maintain order in proceedings, the NBA stressed that such powers must be exercised within legal and procedural limits. Contempt proceedings, it added, “must follow due process to protect fairness and the rights of all parties involved.”

The association also reminded lawyers of their duty to “maintain professionalism in court,” advising them to remain firm yet respectful. It urged all parties to address disputes arising from the incident through proper institutional channels, underscoring that “the sanctity of the court and the dignity of the legal profession must always be upheld.”
