Sokoto law against bandit informants planned as Governor Ahmed Aliyu proposes tougher penalties to curb insecurity and support security operations

The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to introduce a new law prescribing tougher penalties for individuals found to be acting as informants for bandits and other criminal groups operating in the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu disclosed this on Wednesday during a Sallah homage to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, at his palace, as Muslims marked the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The governor said the proposed legislation would soon be forwarded to the Sokoto State House of Assembly as part of broader efforts to strengthen the state’s security architecture and curb collaboration with criminal elements.

He expressed concern that informants have continued to undermine security operations by supplying vital information and support to armed groups operating in parts of the state.

“We need to come together and stop the informant syndrome if we are to succeed in defeating bandits,” Aliyu said.

The governor described informants as a serious threat to peace and warned that his administration would not tolerate activities capable of sabotaging ongoing security efforts.

He also urged political actors to avoid actions capable of heightening tensions in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in the fight against banditry and other forms of violent crime across Sokoto State.

He further warned against vandalism of public infrastructure, stressing that government projects were funded with public resources and must be protected by residents.
