On Wednesday, 4 November 2026, results from the United States midterm elections held the previous day confirmed that Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando of Maryland, Grand Prairie City Councilmember Junior Ezeonu of Texas, District of Columbia Shadow Representative Oye Owolewa of Washington DC, and Pennsylvania State Representative Carol Kazeem had each won elective office in their respective contests.

All four candidates stood as Democrats in an election that saw the party gain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Their successes add to a pattern of growing political participation by Americans of Nigerian descent, following a wave of similar local and state victories in the 2022 midterms.

In Maryland, the 43-year-old Will Jawando defeated Republican Esther Wells to become Montgomery County Executive.

Unofficial figures showed him securing roughly 237,000 votes, or about 78 per cent of those counted. Born in the county to a Nigerian father, Olayinka Jawando, and an American mother, Jawando had served as an at-large member of the County Council since 2018.

He campaigned on education funding and affordable housing after winning a competitive Democratic primary in June. In early September he suffered a heart attack during a basketball game but recovered sufficiently to return to the trail.

Speaking after voting on election day, Will Jawando reflected on the personal stakes.

“This vote meant more than some of the ones in the past because it wasn’t guaranteed that I was gonna be here,” he said. “I’m really thankful for all the prayers and support.” At his watch party he added that the result was not the end of involvement but the start of the hard work of governing.

In Texas, 27-year-old Junior Ezeonu won the seat for House District 101. Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, he moved to the United States with his family at the age of two.

After defeating incumbent Chris Turner in the March Democratic primary, he faced no Republican opponent in the general election.

He previously served on the Grand Prairie City Council from 2021 and became the city’s youngest mayor pro tempore.

In Washington DC, pharmacist Oye Owolewa, whose parents emigrated from Kwara and Osun states, secured an at-large seat on the District of Columbia Council with approximately 69 per cent of the vote against independent Elissa Silverman.

He has served as the district’s elected shadow representative since January 2021, a role focused on advocating for statehood. Owolewa has spoken publicly about early experiences of being bullied over his name and accent.

In Pennsylvania, Carol Kazeem retained her seat representing District 159 in the state House of Representatives, defeating Republican Michael Bannon.

Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, she first entered the legislature after the 2022 midterms as one of eight Nigerian-Americans elected that year.

She is married with three children and has worked in healthcare and community advocacy.

These outcomes illustrate the increasing visibility of the Nigerian diaspora in American public life at a moment of national political realignment.

While final certification of some races remains pending, the confirmed results for the four candidates mark a clear expansion of representation at the local and state level.

Supporters view the wins as evidence of community organisation and long-term investment in civic participation, even as broader debates continue over the direction of policy in the newly shifted Congress.
