Oladimeji Fabiyi, Deputy National Financial Secretary and member of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has accused the Federal Government of targeting opposition leaders out of fear.

Fabiyi criticised the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing the action as a politically motivated move by the presidency.

He contrasted the treatment of opposition figures with the apparent leniency shown to ruling All Progressives Congress members facing corruption allegations.

“President Bola Tinubu appears to have recognised the depth and strength of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s influence and political standing.

This seems to have prompted the unleashing of Nigeria’s three major anti-graft and security agencies EFCC, DSS, and ICPC against him in what looks like a coordinated onslaught,” Fabiyi said in a statement on Thursday.

Fabiyi warned that the aggressive pursuit of opposition members while welcoming ruling party figures with similar allegations reflects a troubling politicisation of Nigeria’s security and anti-corruption agencies.

“All sense of decorum, responsibility, and morality appears to have been sacrificed on the altar of politics,” he added.

The ADC leader described El-Rufai as effectively a “political prisoner of war,” underscoring the party’s view that the government’s actions against opposition figures are disproportionate and fear-driven.
