Gbenga Daniel Advocates Reforms for Primary Education Under Local Government Control

Former governor of Ogun State and now serving senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has expressed concern over the state of primary education in Nigeria, advocating for its control under local government administration. He believes that local governments, with full financial autonomy, are best suited to manage primary education in the country.

Daniel voiced this position in Lagos at a recent retreat organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for members of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education. As the chairman of the retreat, themed “Basic Education Implementation in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges, and Way Forward,” he emphasized that basic education would be more effectively managed if local governments were in charge.
“We should allow the local government to run basic education, especially at the primary school level, while the state should completely hand off other roles and rather concentrate on secondary education,” Daniel stated.
He identified several issues and challenges that need to be addressed to advance the subsector, including lack of access, poor infrastructure, a shortage of competent teachers and instructional materials, an obsolete curriculum, inadequate funding, high teacher/student ratios, limited access to technology, and societal and cultural barriers. Daniel emphasised that local governments are better equipped to tackle these issues.
The executive secretary of UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, highlighted the importance of a comprehensive review of the challenges facing basic education in the country to develop a practicable and enduring solution. He specifically mentioned the UBEC Act, noting that the 20-year-old legislation is overdue for revision to align with current global best practices in basic education, ensuring free and quality education for all Nigerian children.
Dr. Bobboyi underscored that now is the opportune moment for this review, especially as the country strives to overcome economic challenges.
In his remarks, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Lawal Usman, expressed the committee’s commitment to charting a new course for basic education in Nigeria. He also emphasised the need to revisit the 2004 UBEC Act, promising that the retreat would address major issues in the document, relate them to emerging trends in the subsector, and develop practical recommendations for the way forward.

Senator Daniel, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on The Navy, in his condolence message on the demise of Hajia Dada Musa Yar’Adua described her as a very strong woman who raised Champions and heroes.
“Hajia’s life was clearly defined in Motherhood, a clear testament of her strong will and resilience which was evident in the lives of her children including late former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua.
“We can mourn this exceptional woman only as a Champion and symbol of what parenting could be. Her strength of courage and philysical uprightness is demonstrated in her long years, living up to the very ripe old age of 102 years against every odds.
“My sincere condolences to the Governor and good people of Katsina State, members of the Yar’Adua family over this painful but inevitable passage. I pray that Almighty Allah grant them the strength to bear the painful exit.
“And to the dead, may Almighty Allah accept her repose into His eternity”

Naval Base: Otunba Gbenga Daniel Commends President Tinubu Over Internal Security

The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has commended President Bola Tinubu on his continuous efforts in securing and safeguarding Nigeria territorial waters.
Otunba Gbenga Daniel in a letter of appreciation sent to His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on the issuance and presentation of Certificate of Occupancy for the Navy Forward Operational Base in Abigi, Ogun Waterside Local Government, reveals that the singular gesture of the governor will enable construction work to start on the site in earnest as they have been able to capture funding of up to two billion naira (N2b) for the project in the 2024 Appropriation through the support of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The former Governor of Ogun State revealed that the present site was donated by the Community through the traditional rulers in the town several years ago for the Navy Hydrographic purposes but where not much activities actually took place.
His emergence as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy provided the needed opportunity to once again kickstart the project with an expanded dimension.
However, OGD mentioned some notable individuals whose support and encouragement on this project cannot be overlooked.
Most importantly is His Royal Majesty, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba S.K. Adetona whose untiring calls and interventions are of significance.
The immense contributions of the various traditional rulers in Ogun Waterside, Ojotumoro of Abigi, Osobia of Makun and a host of others on this project is very well appreciated.
“Their fears and anxieties about a possible loss of this project to any other states or locations has finally been rested. The apprehension from the loss of the Dangote Refinery to Lagos a few years ago is well understood.”
OGD also heaps praises on the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla and his entire team in the Navy as they have proven to be great compatriots on this journey.
“They have demonstrated great courage in safeguarding the nation’s maritime assets and exhibiting unparalleled partnership on this project.”
OGD and the good people of Ogun East also gives special thanks to His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his untiring effort at securing our territorial waters and without whose support, this project will not materialise.

Odiolowo/Ojuwoye Stakeholders Collectively Speak Against Protest; Commend Council Boss Rasaq Ajala

Stakeholders in Odiolowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area were unanimous in their decision against the proposed nationwide protest slated to begin on Thursday, 1 August, 2024.
The stakeholders’ meeting was conveyed by the Chairman of the council, Honourable Razaq Olusola Ajala to sensitise the people of the area on the need to maintain peace and tranquility and not allowed external forces cause mayhem and chaos in the council area.
From clerics: Christians, Muslims and traditional worshipers; youths under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria; transporters; market men and women; security agents; parents’ forum; the community development committee (CDC); to the staff and management of the council, it was a unanimous decision: no to protest!
First to speak was the Chairman of the council chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Venerable Dr EO Babatunde Durowoju who told the gathering that CAN in Lagos have unanimously said no to protest.
“This is a message from our leader in Lagos State, Reverend Stephen Adegbite. All of us in CAN have decided against any form of protest and we’ve communicated this to our branches and our members,” he said.
His message was echoed by Islamic cleric, Sheikh Aselapa and his counterpart from the traditional religion genre. They both stated that they have warned members of their congregation not engage in any action or utterances that can cause chaos.
The Area Commander of Area D police command, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bamidele Awoniyi expressed appreciation to the council boss for organising the parley saying that it has reduced some of the burden of the police.
“We want our people to maintain the peace and ensure that there is no chaos and violence in this area,” he said.
Comrade Okeyale who spoke on behalf of the NYCN, told the gathering that youths in the state have decided to engage in constructive dialogue with government on any issue.
“It’s the same line we are following here in Odiolowo/Ojuwoye. The Chairman of this council is also taking good care of us just as the Governor is taking good care of us at the state level.
“Thus, it’s our unanimous decision not to engage in any protest,” Okeyale said.
The Iyaloja General of the council, Alhaja Mufliat Abimbola Adebunmi; the traditional ruler of Odiolowo, His Royal Majesty Sikiru Williams Apena; the Vice Chairman of the Council, Seyi Jakande; the Leader of the Council Legislative Arm, Honourable Rilwan Ajenifuja; and the representative of Mushin State Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Nureni Akinsanya all spoke with one voice on the need to avoid actions and utterances that lead to violence.
Rounding up the programme with his speech, Honourable Ajala expressed appreciation to the people for answering his calls.
“I also want to say thank you all for speaking unanimously against protest. It’s not that we’re against protest. No! Protest is part of democracy and it’s the constitutional rights of the citizens to protest.
“But experience has shown that this kind of protest has political undertone and designed to cause chaos, mayhem and looting. We should not allow this to happen,” he said.
Honourable Ajala appealed to the people to have patience with the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration noting that the President is working assiduously to make life better for the people.
“It has never happened in the history of Nigeria but the Tinubu administration has started giving students loans for their education and just yesterday, the new minimum wage was signed into law by the President. We’re getting there and soon we’ll see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he assured.
Honourable Ajala reminded the gathering of what happened during the EndSARS protests noting how a legitimate protest over alleged police brutality was hijacked by fifth columnists and turned it into a political tool to settle political scores.
“The destruction unleashed on Lagos during that period is still reverberating. But remember, we bear the brunt of the destruction, you and I because the money used in purchasing most of the items and materials is the taxes we pay,” he said.
Ajala assured the people that he would not relent in putting smiles on their faces.
